Rooney the dog and my random morning

Something terrible happened this morning, something terrible happens most mornings but today it was worse than usual. After the stress of dropping the kids off at nursery which is never easy, I was on the short drive to my office which is based in a community centre on a council estate. I work for the voluntary sector and this is about as plush as it gets. I was only a few yards from the car park entrance when a dog flew across the road from out of no where. I didn't have time to apply my brakes and then I heard a thud. I looked in my rear view mirror and there was a little white doggy lying in the road. I pulled over and got out, thankfully it's owners were hot on it's tail (if you'll pardon the pun) or I don't know what I would have done.

Man owner approached the dog first and was followed by a hysterical woman. Man owner was saying "we've lost him love, we've lost him" to woman owner who was presumably his wife. I felt terrible but it was evident to me with my limited veterinary skills that the dog was clearly still alive. So I asked where the nearest vets was and offered to drive the woman and injured dog there. Meanwhile the dog was still lying in the road whilst the man owner directed traffic around it. The woman was panicking that she didn't know how she should pick the dog up and did I know? I'm sorry but I have no idea how to move injured dogs out of the road, I've never felt it necessary to go an an animal first aid course. Eventually she scooped it up and I moved one of the kids car seats so that she could jump into the back and sit with the dog on her lap. This revealed the remnants of a chocolate crispy bun which the woman had to sit on. It's probably still stuck to the back of her skirt now, I'm sure this is the least of her worries.

Thankfully the vets was only a minute up the road as it was quite surreal having a complete stranger in my car cradling a dog in her arms saying "please hold on Rooney, don't die". I tried to make small talk, I asked how old the dog was (10 months), what its name was (Rooney) and the woman told me that she had only started looking after it yesterday as her daughter couldn't cope with it.

We got to the vets and that is where I left poor Rooney and Mrs Smith. I gave her my business card and asked her if she would mind giving me a ring to tell me if Rooney makes it. I rang the vets about an hour ago and they told me he seems to be okay. I am relieved as although it wasn't my fault I don't want the death of someones dog on my conscience. I am now going to hoover my car out, I've needed an excuse to give it a valet for weeks.

Hopefully they'll keep Rooney on a lead in future...
